Duty class is the single specification decision that most often separates a crane that lasts its design life from one that becomes a maintenance problem in year three. It is also the one buyers are most often asked to state before they have the information to state it.
What duty class actually describes
Duty class is not capacity. A 15 tonne crane and a 60 tonne crane can carry the same duty class, and two 15 tonne cranes can sit three classes apart.
What it describes is how hard the crane works over its life: how many cycles it runs, and how close to rated capacity each of those lifts is. Under IS 3177 this is expressed as classes M3 to M8. The higher the class, the more the design has to allow for fatigue — heavier structural sections, larger bearings, more capable brakes, better rope.
The two inputs that set the class
1. Cycles per hour, over the working life
Not what the crane does on its busiest day — what it averages over years of service. A stores crane that makes six lifts a shift is a different machine from a mill house crane that runs continuously through a crushing season.
2. Average load as a fraction of rated capacity
A crane that is rated for 20 tonnes but typically lifts 4 tonnes has a light load spectrum. One that is rated for 20 tonnes and typically lifts 18 has a heavy one. The second crane will accumulate fatigue damage far faster, even if both make the same number of lifts.

These are working guidance, not a substitute for the calculation. Where a duty is borderline we work it through against the actual cycle rather than rounding to whichever class is convenient.
What under-specification actually costs
A crane specified one class below its real duty does not fail on commissioning. That is what makes the mistake easy to make and expensive to carry.
What happens instead is gradual: wheel flanges wear, gearboxes run hot, rope needs replacing ahead of schedule, and brake adjustment becomes a recurring job. The cost lands three to five years later, as unplanned downtime — and in a seasonal plant, downtime lands precisely when production cannot absorb it.
The difference in first cost between one duty class and the next is usually a small fraction of the crane price. The difference in availability over fifteen years is not.
